Since the Second World War, part of Alnwick Castle has been used by educational establishments. Firstly by the Newcastle Church High School for Girls then, from 1945 to 1975, as a teacher training college. Since 1981, the same section has become a branch campus for St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, USA, forming part of their International Study Programme.

This programme is designed to give American students the opportunity to experience different cultures and customs whilst gaining credits towards their degrees. The majority of the courses taught at Alnwick fall within the humanities and social sciences, and some of the courses, such as English History and Contemporary Britain, are taught by staff from Alnwick. The study programme usually includes a 'Field Trip Experience', allowing students to visit a number of historical sites, areas of natural beauty and British cities.

During their stay in Alnwick, the students live and study within the Castle, and are expected to undertake a certain amount of domestic work there. 'Homestays', where the students spend time with a local family, are an important part of learning about life in Northumberland, and many develop unique links with both the town, often returning in later life.
