New For 2017 - Unrolling History

Around 950 years ago, William de Percy, direct ancestor of Ralph Percy, the present Duke of Northumberland, came to England from France.  But was he part of the invading Norman army with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066?

To try to answer that question the Duke and his Archivist examine the evidence contained in a fascinating
15th century parchment roll from the archives of the castle.  In the exhibition, the visitor can see their discussion and enjoy the rare opportunity to view the actual document for themselves.

Harry Hotspur Exhibition

Visit this fascinating exhibition to discover more about Harry Hotspur, Alnwick Castle's most famous son and one of the country's most legendary medieval knights.

A fun shadow-puppet animation tells Hotspur’s story with a modern twist.

First World War

Opened in 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the First World War, this exhibition explores the impact of the War on the castle community through selected personal stories of members of the Percy family, their household staff and estate workers.

The exhibition is located in the newly restored Edwardian ‘below stairs’ area of the castle.

Capability Brown Exhibition

The design of the exhibition, which features both inside the State Rooms and outside on the Terrace,  is inspired by the idea of looking at a picture on an artist's easel, highlighting the artistic nature of the Arcadian landscape designed by the famous Lancelot 'Capability' Brown in the 1770s.
