They were also occupied by household staff, soldiers and other people who helped to run the castle and manage the surrounding estate.
The lord of the castle had important responsibilities. As well as defending the territory, they were responsible for overseeing the land, managing its resources and exercising authority over the local population.

What were castles used for?
Defence and protection
Castles protected people during war and unrest. Strong walls, defended entrances and towers helped withstand attacks, while castles could also provide refuge for local people.
Centres of administration
Castles were centres of local government. Lords managed land and resources, collected revenues and controlled the surrounding area.
Homes for the nobility
Castles were also homes for lords and their families, along with servants, craftsmen and soldiers. Over time, many were adapted to provide greater comfort.
Centres of trade and local life
Castles attracted people, trade and businesses, helping nearby settlements grow. Markets, craftsmen and merchants benefited from the activity surrounding the castle.
Where did castles come from?
The history of castles in England is closely connected to the Norman Conquest of 1066.
Following his victory at the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror introduced castles as a way of establishing and maintaining Norman control across England. Building fortifications allowed the Normans to secure strategically important locations and strengthen their authority over newly conquered territory.
Some of the earliest Norman castles were known as motte-and-bailey castles.
These typically consisted of a raised mound, or motte, topped by a defensive structure, together with an enclosed courtyard, or bailey. Often constructed largely from timber, they could be built relatively quickly and provided an effective defensive position.
As castle design developed, timber fortifications were increasingly replaced or reinforced with stone. These new structures offered greater strength and durability, with thick walls, towers and heavily defended gateways becoming characteristic features of medieval castles.

Today, castles are no longer required to perform the defensive role for which they were originally built, but their significance has not disappeared.
