Weddings at Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle is a magnificent venue for civil wedding ceremonies and receptions, with a long history of entertaining and hospitality. It has been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percys, for more than 700 years.

The castle’s vibrant history and breathtaking architecture - set within glorious ‘Capability’ Brown landscape - make it one of the North East’s most iconic venues. Alnwick Castle has taken several starring roles on the big screen, not least as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, making it a truly cinematic backdrop to your special day.

Guest Hall

Weddings at Alnwick Castle are held in the spectacular Guest Hall, which lends a historic atmosphere to wedding celebrations with its beautifully restored beamed roof and stone archways. This stunning banqueting hall is available throughout the year for ceremonies and receptions, accommodating up to 180 guests.

During the castle’s open season, wedding parties can enjoy drinks and photographs on the Gun Terrace, affording breathtaking views of the River Aln and sweeping Northumbrian landscape. Weddings in the Guest Hall during the castle’s closed season include the exclusive use of the Castle Courtyard, allowing your guests to spill out onto the cobbles to mingle with drinks and canapés.

Hulne Abbey

Hulne Abbey is a truly exclusive and enchanting wedding venue, nestled on a hillside in the private parklands of the Duke of Northumberland. Surrounded by medieval walls and founded in the 13th century as a Carmelite monastery, Hulne Abbey is a beautifully secluded venue for your celebrations.

The abbey is licensed for wedding ceremonies, providing an atmospheric setting for your vows; while the grounds are a tranquil hideaway for breathtaking photographs. With ruined walls and archways leading into hidden alcoves and secret gardens, there are plenty of opportunities for guests to explore while enjoying drinks and canapés, and children can play on the lawns beneath the branches of the remarkable horizontally-growing tree.

You are also more than welcome to host your reception in the grounds, with ample space for a marquee or rustic tipi. Available March to September, Hulne Abbey comes alive particularly during the summer months, when the mossy walls are splashed with colour from tumbling wildflowers. You could hire the abbey for the whole day and have the run of the grounds until midnight, from the warmth of the afternoon sun to the dark of Northumbrian night skies, illuminating your way with lanterns.

The layout of the grounds makes Hulne Abbey a hugely flexible venue, allowing your celebrations to be as intimate or extensive as you imagined, comfortably accommodating anything up to 500 guests. Less than five miles from the historic market town of Alnwick, the abbey is easily accessible for your guests who will be delighted with the beautiful woodland drive to its gates.

"The Abbey looked unbelievably beautiful on the day and so many of our guests commented on what an amazing venue it was. -- July 2013"

"We are very grateful to the person who ran into the town to get some cotton and a needle so that the rip in my dress could be fixed... Now that's good service!"

"From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, thank you, thank you. It really was the best day of our lives and you played a huge part in making that so."
